Programs and Services….

Good nutritious meals are a very important part of health and well-being for elderly persons living in the community.  Because dietary intake is often reduced, due to health problems and decreased activity, it is even more important that meals provide the necessary nutrition for good health.  Just as important, the meal is delivered by a cheerful and carefully selected volunteer, who is also able to report any health or security concerns that require follow-up.

Gilmore Lodge’s Dietary Department provides specialized dietary services to our 80 residents, the clients of our Adult Day Service, as well as Fort Erie Meals on Wheels.  We can provide a number of special diets and texture modifications, taking your personal requirements into consideration.

We prepare meals five days a week for Meals on Wheels in our kitchen at Gilmore Lodge.  The menus we use are supervised by a Registered Dietician and are consistent with the requirements of Canada’s Food Guide.  Meal production is directed by our Food Services Manager who is a qualified Food Services Supervisor.  All of our staff are qualified Food Handlers.   We are regularly inspected by the Regional Public Health Department, as well as the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Compliance Officer and Dietary Compliance Officer.

Hot Meal Program
Hot Meals are nutritionally balanced and are prepared at Gilmore Lodge under the supervision of a dietition. They include soup, an entrée of meat, fish or poultry and potatoes, noodles or rice OR an alternate, two vegetables, bread and butter, milk and a dessert.  Special diets are handled individually. Meals are delivered 5 days a week over the noon hour.  Clients may order meals only for the number of days a week they are required.

Frozen Meal Program
Frozen Meals is a 5-week rotating menu prepared by Niagara Ina Grafton Gage Village, St Catharines, and are delivered once a week on Wednesdays.  Clients can choose from a menu of nutritionally balanced meals to get the foods they prefer. Soup and/or dessert is also available.

Wheels to Meals - Congregate Dining
Once a month, usually on the last Wednesday of each month, volunteers pick up clients to attend a luncheon.  The meal is followed by a short program of games or entertainment.  This program provides homebound clients with social interaction and some fun.  Most special needs clients can be accommodated. A reasonable fee is charged for the meal.

Who is Eligible?
Anyone who has difficulty preparing a nutritionally balanced meal should contact the office for information.  This may include the elderly, the disabled, homebound people, convalescents or those recently discharged from hospital.

Meals on Wheels is available for short or long-term clients.
